The trick to learning a new language fast
Learning a new language is really tricky, we learnt our native tongue from birth, and it comes easily to us as we use it every day with people around us, but learning how a new language changes its words based on gender, or how to properly pronounce those words, that requires a lot of work. For most people then it will take years to fully grasp a language, but I have heard of people becoming nearly fluent in as little as a few months of intensive lessons.
If you prefer to take things slower then you can invest in a course like the ones offered by Rosetta Stone, then you just pop the software into your computer and you can learn on your own schedule. The major problem with these is that you are left to govern yourself, which means often people start off really strong, but then the problems of daily life gradually take over and they stop putting in the time they need. Or if you are just going on holiday and you want to learn some basic phrases then you could get something like a German instructional DVD that you can watch on a DVD player and gives you a few hours of instruction on the most popular words and phrases.
Obviously lessons are one of the best ways to learn a language because they structure your learning and they also force you to turn up because you have paid for the lessons, and because you would have to explain the next week why you missed a lesson. An excellent method to learn a language that not a lot of people talk about is to go over to the country for a few months to live. That way you are immersed in the language and as you are forced to use it daily then you will pick things up a lot quicker and remember them a lot easier.
