Summary
An innovative new insurance product has been developed by Animal Friends Insurance. The insurance plan offers lower premiums to vegetarians, based on evidence that they are at a reduced risk than their carnivorous counterparts of developing certain diseases. It remains to be seen whether other insurance firms will follow the example set by AFI .

A none profit insurance firm has introducd an insurance policy which offers fish-eaters and vegetarians a reduced premium life insurance quote .

The offer, thought to be the 1st of its kind, is being introduced by Animal Friends Insurance (AFI). The organisation is offering veggies a seven per cent cheaper premiumon life insurance premiums
The firm claimed that veggies ought to pay a lesser sum for the cover, which pays out if the customer dies, because they were more unlikely to suffer from a list of chronic illnesses, including some cancers.

Susan Gaddet, a director at AFI, said that the risk of veggies being diagnosed with certain cancers is reduced by up to 40 per cent and the danger of them suffering from heart disease is cut by up to 30 per cent, but despite this they have, until now, had to pay the same premiums as clients who eat meat.
She says that AFI believe that this is unfair and says the insurance companies should acknowledge the idea that being a veggie can impose have a significant effect on life expectancy and cut its monthly premiums accordingly.

A full-price arrangement is also on the market for meat eaters. Both policies are sold by LV=, which was known as Liverpool Victoria.

In common with normal life policies, a range of things contribute to the cost of the premiums including whether the applicant smokes, their age, sex and weight.

At the moment, Animal Friends Insurance is making the 6 per cent cheaper premium itself from the commission it receives from LV=. In the future, however, the company’s aim was to offer lower costs on specialist insurance plans. In the organisation is hoping to sign up enough veggies to make it economically worthwhile for LV= to underwrite yet another insurance plan that takes the vegetarian’s diet into account.

Indeed there are big savings to be made, a 42-year-oldnon-smoker purchasing £300,000 worth of cover might potentially save £393.60 over a twenty five year period.

Where life insurance quotes is concerned, AFI believes that life insurers should begin to treat people that eat meat and those that do not eat meat in a way that is similar to the way they view those that smoke and those that don’t. Perhaps other companies in the insurance industry will take the same initiative.

Some senior executivesin the insurance industry are dismissive that there is any proof that vegetarians live longer, and how any insurer could prove that people who had applied stating that they are vegetarian did not sometimes enjoy the odd lamb chop.

When it comes to smoking, the insurance company can refer to your Doctor’s records – if you now don’t smoke it’s certainly likely that your Doctor will be aware. However, this is unlikely to apply when it comes to eating meat, an insurance executive said.

But many veggetarians say that they are not worried about people falling off the vegetarian wagon and suggested that once a vegetarian has become a veggie, they do not go back to meat-eating, that is unlike applicants who smoke who tend to drift out and back again into their old smoking ways.
