How to Buy the Most Beneficial Running Shoe

Most athletes spend little time picking out a good shoe, even knowing how important it is. With so many running shoes on the market it can be confusing to know exactly what to look for when researching shoes. It sure would be nice to buy a shoe that will last a few hundred miles of running, and doesn’t cost a fortune. Good running shoes do not need to be expensive. The shoe shouldn’t cause any pain.

It’s a fact, your running shoes are your most expensive gear – like toddlers thinking of their Razor Kiddie Kick Scooter. Your pinkies will be protected and your stride will probably improve with good shoes. There is no bigger sports market and the better jogging shoe manufacturers sink a lot of their profits into the technology and science of running shoes.

My favorite running shoe picks are…… ASICS, Brooks and Pumas. This is from my own running with these shoes and I’m happy as I was with my Razor A2 scooter. If you get a good Brooks or Asics shoe, they will have good support in the ankle and it will be very cushioned. Now with Pumas dependant on the shoe, they probably won’t have the cushioned ankle support. The Puma though, is not heavy at all and comfy on your feet. My recommendation is the Brooks, or Asics. I can say all of my preferences, but really what works for you is what is best for you.  I have never come across a bad pair of Brooks or Asics. It may be difficult, but it’s well worth it to find what fits best on your foot.

With shoes, you really do get what you pay for, so buy smartly. If you’re just getting started in jogging, this is essential. Many people get a bad start in jogging simply by using a simple tennis shoe. Starting tips are great because they give you guidance to get your first shoe.

The first place to go is to a store that deals only in in jogging shoes. Advise the salesperson of the type of distance running, the frequency of your running, and whether you run on concrete, track field, etc. They don’t always do this, so ask – have the store clerk check the arch of your foot. This measurement will determine what shoe type you will wear like a tyke on a Razor Kiddie Kick. This measurement is very important to find the best running shoe.

You need to know what type of foot you have in order to choose a shoe that correctly supports your particular foot type. Jogging shoes come in three types – semicurved, straight, and curved. There is a test to show the arch to the floor ratio using a pail of water and your bare foot then stand on the floor and see the mark you leave. Take a look at the imprint you left to see if you have a normal flat, or high arch.

Crazy as it seems, many people are thinking that running without any shoes at all is good for the feet. This has runners shucking off their high-tech trainers in favor of naked feet — or minimalist footwear like Newton All-Weather Trainer, the Nike Free and the glove-like Vibram FiveFingers.

Do shoes really prevent injury?  Not so, say many that study whether shoes really do help or hurt the foot. Take them off and studies have shown that fewer injuries occur making you think that shoes actually cause injury. Finally, cheap shoes do cause less injuries statistically, but not enough study has gone into why this is.
