Growing bonsai is an absorbing and very rewarding hobby. Growing bonsai is not an expensive pastime with not many specialist tools being required. A bonsai is a living sculpture that anyone would be very proud to own.

Bonsai are container planted plants or trees that are expressly developed to be a smaller version of its full size counterpart. Bonsai can be developed from nearly any perennial wood stemmed trees or shrubs that produce branches, and has the capacity to grow small through pot confinement with the assistance of crown and root pruning.

Bonsai can be developed from seed, young shoots lifted from the wild (please comply with any laws regarding taking wild plants in your region), or can be purchased as ready planted bonsai. Although growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest route, but you will then have total control of how your bonsai will develop.

Bonsai trees are planted in special bonsai pots that not only restrict root development, but are also designed to enhance the appearance of the bonsai. Specialist soils can be purchased that will give you the ideal conditions for your bonsai tree to grow.

Many specialist techniques are employed to shape your bonsai tree and give it a unique character. These techniques include leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting, dwarfing and deadwood, (a method of aging bark). Only a few specialist tools are needed to sculpt bonsai, and these are readily available quite cheaply. All that you need to get started can easily be bought from a bonsai nursery.

If you wonder if growing bonsai is for you, I say give it a try, bonsai trees are simple to grow, take a small amount of your time, every bonsai is unique, and who doesn’t admire a bonsai.

Bonsai trees can be had as indoor and outdoor varieties, many bonsai are best left outdoors in the summer months and then grown inside during the colder winter months.

And for anyone that likes the idea, but would rather not get involved in growing bonsai, you can even buy artificial bonsai trees.
